[ Ai breezes past him, and with a flourish of his own cloak, he follows... straight to the still-broken door. ]
Ah... right, I forgot about this. Well, it can't be helped. We'll just have to trust in my bounded field to deter anyone in the meantime. I'd have my insects work on fixing it, but they aren't exactly carpenters, you know? Ah, unless you don't mind a door made of twigs and leaves?
[ He says with a jovial, humorous tone... as if he's not talking about physical proof of how panicked he was last night. Still, once Ai has her coat and shoes on... ]
Right! Incognito mode, on!
[ ...he suddenly turns into the 17cm tall Robin Goodfellow and starts trying to crawl into her coat pocket. ]
[ She's seen this little trick of his before, so it's not exactly like this is new, but it's still deeply jarring. If she didn't know any better, she'd be tempted to suspect that he was having at least a little fun throwing her off like this. The one single thing she's learned to be confident about when it comes to Oberon is how much fun he has picking on her. ]
D-do you really have to... ugh, never mind. [ She's pulling her pocket open a little wider so he can clamber inside. W-when was the last time she cleaned this thing out again? There's probably nothing worse than an ancient receipt in there but still. ] Why exactly are you going... incognito like this?
[ There is in fact an old receipt in there, which is unceremoniously tossed out alongside a few small and forgotten coins as he gets himself nice and snug in her pocket. What? Picking on her? Having fun picking on her? He would never.
In any case, his tiny little head pokes out of her pocket and speaks in a higher pitch than his normal voice. ]
Well, I could just go into spirit form... but this is more fun, isn't it?
[ Fun for who, exactly? she's very tempted to ask, but she bites her tongue. She is absolutely not giving him the satisfaction of getting under her skin any more than he very evidently already has. Instead she allows herself once final huff of annoyance before she makes her way out of the apartment. She doesn't let herself glance back at the total mess still perfectly visible through the broken door and tells herself instead that she'll add it to her increasingly long list of things to worry about later.
Even knowing she's not alone, she feels a prickle of unease as she steps out onto the street. Oberon's right - the chances of anyone trying anything out in broad daylight are pretty low. But she still feels horribly exposed as she makes her way down the street. She tries not to look too obviously uncomfortable but she can't keep her eyes off the rooftops, as if she might spot a stray observer keeping a eye on her from up there.
Not being paranoid was nice while it lasted. ]
So... what exactly is the plan for this...? [ She's speaking in a low voice, just loud enough for him to hear. ] Assuming there even is a plan to begin with...
Suddenly, she feels like she really owes Ichigo Saitou an apology. ]
Fine. [ said with another bone deep sigh. ] But if everything goes wrong because I had no idea what was supposed to be going on, you've only got yourself to blame, you know.
[ The hospital's at a walkable distance at least, which is a bit of a culture shock for Ai, who's used to getting driven and catching trains everywhere. She'd considered it, if only to get this over with, but as exposed as being out on the street makes her feel, the claustrophobia of being in an unfamiliar vehicle would surely be worse.
She doesn't speak up again until they've just about arrived, still keeping her voice low. ]
We're almost there... is this the part where I get told what's going on?
Mm... well, I don't wanna ruin the surprise, but I guess I shouldn't let you go in completely blind!
[ Oh, good, so she's just gotta go in partially blind because little baby Oberon wants to make it a surprise... yeah that sounds about right. ]
Just go into that urgent care thing and say you've been feeling really faint lately. Y'know, stuff that happens when you've lost a lot of blood. Just go along with it until you get taken inside, and I'll handle it from there!
[ If Ai feels like that isn't nearly enough of an explanation, than she'd probably be right, but it seems like that's all Robin Goodfellow feels like divulging. ]
[ So your big plan is to just tell them the truth?! ... she thinks, but once again restrains herself from saying out loud. She's really starting to wish she'd just stayed home.
She doesn't bother with a response and just marches herself into the urgent care entrance as he'd said. And as annoyed as she might be at this whole thing, her performance is pretty flawless when she pipes up at the desk. ]
Um, hi - sorry, I don't have an appointment or anything, but I haven't been feeling too good lately and a friend said I should come...
[ She rattles off her symptoms - the dizziness, the light headedness and the feeling faint - all while hoping that whatever ridiculous plan Oberon's got going on, it's actually going to pay off. ]
[ To a certain extent! So long as it's enough to get her inside, it should be fine. She has to wait for a moment, but it doesn't take long for a doctor to come and fetch her. Everything goes fairly smoothly, and really, it's not like anyone could blame Ai for wondering if there even is a plan at this point.
And hey, maybe that's the point. Getting through this without Oberon having to do anything would be ideal, after all. Maybe it could even be a nice little lesson of what one can accomplish with the truth!
...hah, as if. Perhaps inevitably, the doctor asks if she's had any serious injuries lately. Of course at this point, it wouldn't be too hard to just keep things going by lying well enough, but everybody likes it when things are more certain to work out, right?
The second the doctor asks about any injuries, Oberon suddenly shoots out of her pocket, and before either Ai or the doctor can react... a full-sized Oberon has manifested in the room with two fingers on the doctor's forehead. ]
Aah... it looked for a second that this might actually go off without a hitch, but looks like I had to intervene in the end. Oh well, I expected as much anyway.
[ There's a look of initial surprise on the doctor's face, but not a single sound comes out... and his eyes start to turn blank, as if being put into a trance. ]
[ To Ai's credit - and she thinks she deserves a lot of it, at this point - she manages to stave off most of the inconvenient questions. Really, she's been kind of dreading the uh, inevitable suggestion a doctor might have when a girl walks in and starts talking about symptoms of blood loss so as much of a surprise as it is to see him popping back into the room, Ai's no less relieved to have Oberon take over before any awkward questions need answering.
... She's a little disappointed to see the Fairy King, still. But she adds that to the very long list of 'things to worry about later' again. ]
If that was what you expected, why didn't you bother telling me?
[ She knows exactly why. She just wants him to know how deeply exasperated she is by all this!! ]
[ We're just gonna brush past that feeling of disappointment, huh? Oberon shoots her one of his usual smiles, his fingers still on the doctor's forehead. ]
Well, can you really blame me for hoping for the best?
[ Those words, like everything else he's said today, must sound alien in his voice. ]
We're just here for a quick blood transfusion. Honestly, it's my fault for not fixing you up sooner, but I still think I did everything I could!
[ He turns his attention back to the doctor. ]
Still, humans are naturally curious creatures, aren't they? Even when it's better for them to turn a blind eye. So I'm just going to do a little suggestion here and there. Just enough so that they'll give you what you need without thinking to question why you need it... and then let us walk right out the front door! Ah, that last part is the most important part, since we're rather short on money right now.
[ Oberon please stop scamming people. He's quite talkative as the Fairy King, isn't he? Nevermind that it can't possibly be that simple, there are plenty of other things to consider... but then again, being talkative doesn't make him any less of a liar. ]
[ It takes more restraint that she would've liked not to cringe. She's used to hearing Oberon talk to everyone else like that, using a whole load of words in that cheery voice of his to say absolutely nothing at all, but having it directed at her again is just...
Really, it should be preferable. She doesn't exactly want to be snarled and sniped at every time he opens his mouth but she'd gotten used to that. She's starting to make tentative steps towards actually understanding it. But now the rules have gone all topsy turvy all of a sudden and she's having to try and make sense of them on the fly. ]
Nothing... bad's going to happen, right? To him, I mean.
[ Watching him just do... whatever it is he's doing to the doctor's brain is making her feel a little nauseous, truth be told. ]
[ Everything about the Fairy King should be considered objectively better. It's why he always goes out as him, it's a lie that makes dealing with others easier. He could probably keep that lie up until the day he dies if he so wished.
But for some reason, whenever he was around Ai and only Ai, he found himself unable to stand staying like this. As if her lies on their own were so unbearable to him that he couldn't keep the act up.
Though, with that said, things are different right now. ]
Hm? Oh, of course not. Well... he might have some gaps in his memory of today, but nothing serious. Though I'm going to have to do this a few more times to some of the other staff.
[ He takes his finger off of the doctor's head, and clarity can be seen returning to his eyes. ]
[ Blanca suddenly skitters out from under his cloak, and the instant she's out, Robin Goodfellow returns and promptly hops onto the large white moth's back. ]
Be nice to the good doctor here! Ah, but don't talk to him too much, he might snap out of the suggestion! Bye!
[ And with all the speed of a moth that can inexplicably fly at mach speeds, zips out of the room with that. ]
[ Aaaand he's already gone. And Ai's left with the cleanup. Wonderful.
... no, that's not fair, is it? Pretty much everything Oberon's been doing since last night has been cleanup. She wonders, with a sudden pang of anxiety in her chest, if he's lost his patience with her. If she'd misread him last night and that indelicate gentleness had been nothing more than a way to get her back on her feet so he could handle the rest of it without his pathetic Master falling apart.
It'd make things a whole lot less complicated. But it makes her stomach twist for some reason, regardless.
So she does her best to make the whole thing as painless as possible. She doesn't speak up any more than necessary, only when prompted and cooperates as quickly with everything she's directed to do as she can. Really, the whole thing is more painless than she expected - a sharp scratch when the needle goes in and after that, it's a whole lot of sitting around while nothing happens. Something certainly feels different by the time it's done, but she doesn't quite know for sure if she feels better just yet. But her legs aren't quite as wobbly when she finally stands up and her head isn't spinning as much. So it's a start.
No sign of Oberon quite yet, as the nurses start herding her towards the exit now she's done. For the second time today, she tries not to let herself be too disappointed. ]
[ Objectively, Oberon wouldn't say she's wrong, this is cleanup. His patience is short, he's frustrated, he's literally flying around at mach speeds to make sure everything gets fixed properly...
...but if he had lost patience with her then he wouldn't be doing this in the first place. He'd be lounging around doing fuck-all as usual and saying something along the lines of "if you want my help, then make me help with one of your command seals".
But that's not the case. He'll complain, he'll curse up a storm, and he'll snipe at her and tell her to be grateful... but he does it anyway.
...this doesn't mean he's going to start cleaning up around the house, though.
Case and point, while Ai was being treated, Robin Goodfellow was zipping through the hospital and working his tiny little butt off. Charming enough of the significant staff members so that questions aren't asked, messing with records to cover up the unexplainable and unrecorded usage of blood for a transfusion, fucking with the cameras, etc etc.
The plan was not simple in the slightest, it never was. It's perhaps because of this that Oberon doesn't immediately reappear once Ai is herded outside without a word.
He does still appear after some delay, though, in the form of Robin Goodfellow suddenly falling onto the top of her head from out of nowhere without any warning. ]
Aaah... I worked hard... sleepy...
[ And seemingly falling asleep upright on her head in broad fucking daylight. ]
[ Ai thinks she's been pretty composed through all this. There was that embarrassing little blip last night, sure, but considering all the feelings it'd clawed out of her brain, she's pretty proud of herself for not having a complete meltdown. But it also means all that pent up tension is still coiled up in her heart with no release.
And what that means is that when he plonks right down on her head, she jumps so violently that her feet actually leave the floor and she has to clap both hands over her mouth to stop a scream from bleeding out. For a split second, she's certain that she's being attacked again while Oberon's not here to help - and it's only when he tumbles forward off her head and she instinctively reaches to catch him that she realizes what's actually happened. ]
Wh... hold on, are you really...?
[ Nope, there he goes. Honk shoo, right in her hands.
Ai stares down at him for a moment, entirely unsure of what to do. Then a thin noise bubbles up from her throat that doesn't quite become a laugh. Now who's the handful?
But that's fine. He's the one who's been cleaning up after her mess today. So, stubbornly avoiding any sidelong looks from passersby, she sets out for home, carrying him carefully in her hands.
She tells herself she doesn't feel that lingering disappointment in her chest even a little. ]
[ He is, at the very least, small enough to comfortably ride on the back of a moth the size of a small dog. Hiding him from view isn't hard, and it's entirely possible that he's doing this intentionally just the fuck with her..
Fortunately, it's as Ai starts to approach their apartment building again that he wakes up, suddenly squirming out of her grip. ]
[ Ai meets his gaze readily and feels something unfamiliar when she does - a spike of irritation. She doesn't even understand why, just that she feels it, steely and sharp in her throat. For the first time in a while, she finds herself thinking about Nino. That horrible fight. She hears "Why don't you just drop dead already?!" as clearly as if she'd been screaming it in Ai's face all over again.
She doesn't know why. She just knows that, suddenly - maybe that dead, pained look Nino had walked out of the room with hadn't been quite so inexplicable after all.
She swallows and does her best to keep her voice steady. ]
Well. They didn't take any more blood out of me, at least.
[ The joke lands just as flatly as her voice does. She tries to brighten it. ]
And... it doesn't look like anybody was following us, or anything like that.
[ Oberon stares at her for a moment, but if he can see that spike of irritation, he doesn't seem to do anything about it. He just keeps smiling that same smile and continues on with... well, any topic that doesn't directly involve those feelings. ]
Mm, good. I doubt things are going to escalate quite so quickly, but it's good to be careful.
[ Seriously, trying to rush a Grail War as unorthodox as this one without understanding it... the Assassin's master must be some fool. ]
But for now, we should fortify our own base. Let's be off, Master.
[ "Master", huh? That's what he calls her before starting off towards the building in order to head inside. ]
She stays rooted to the spot, staring after him and trying to tell herself that the churning nausea in her stomach is anything but what it is. Even with regular people, she's no good at reading their feelings, reading between the lines or reading the room - she's hopeless at all of it. And Oberon almost seems to delight in making it that much harder for her.
But even a girl as hopelessly, miserably clueless as Ai knows what rejection is.
She's had a lot of time to learn, after all. ]
Is this-
[ She starts forward a few hesitant steps. The wind gusts her hair up into her face and even with her coat, it feels like it's blowing right through to her bones. The sun's shining so brightly today and yet it's so horribly cold out. ]
Is this how it's going to be now? Is this how you're going to be, all the time?
There's a moment of silence, and with Oberon's back facing Ai, there's no way to tell what kind of expression he has on his face.
At least, until he sucks in a deep breath and turns around with his usual smile. ]
...would that trouble you?
[ His face, his smile, all completely still. He has it easier than Ai. It's unfair to compare them in their abilities to remain smiling no matter what, but that doesn't make it any less similar.
Blanca, the beautiful white moth who led her to him last night, sits perched on his shoulder. Not that insects have much in the way of expressions, but she is almost certainly staring at Ai. ]
[ All of a sudden, Ai feels like she can't breathe. She's gotten used to him turning that expression on the others, placating and warm, disarming and utterly void of any human feeling whatsoever. She knows that smile inside and out because it's the one she'd practiced every day since she was twelve years old up to the day she died. That's why having it turned on her now is so unbearably suffocating. The sight of it makes her want to-
Oh, Nino-chan, she thinks. No wonder you hated me so much. ]
Yes, it would!
[ The words come exploding out of her before she can control herself. She takes another step forward and without thinking at all, she clutches her hand in the other - the one marked with her Command Seal. The one he'd held tight enough to bruise, once. ]
Didn't you tell me not to lie to you?! I've been trying my best, so - how is this fair?!
[ It's not like Oberon knows about whoever "Nino" is. He saw the memories of her death, not her life. Yet as he stands there with his unchanging smile... as if mirroring that very same day. ]
Sorry, but you're right, it's not fair. But it can't be helped, Ai.
[ He doesn't take a step forward, he just continues to smile. ]
I am Oberon. The Faerie King Oberon. The Great Liar, Oberon. You may not understand what that means yet, but that's fine, you don't have to. Lies are love, right? Things will go back to normal, just like you want. Well, I won't deny that there might be an adjustment period, but you're human. You'll get over it.

Oberon, the Fairy King, stops in his tracks.
